Putrada Ekadashi Fast

Putrada Ekadashi is observed in the month of Pausha. The word “Putra” means son in Sanskrit.

Legend

One prosperous kingdom was ruled by a king; he had a worthy wife, everything was in abundance, and he was loved and revered. Only one misfortune - the king had no son. Countless attempts yielded nothing. To what wise men they did not go, and what sacrifices they did not offer to the gods - nothing helped the queen to become pregnant with a son.The king was already not young, and with each day he became more and more clouded by his future fate. To whom would he transfer his kingdom, who would take care of him and bring him water in old age? No riches were a joy to him anymore. He became more and more withdrawn into his agonizing thoughts. One day at dawn, as always immersed in sorrow, the king saddled his horse and rode into a dense forest. No one in his kingdom knew where and how far he had gone. Meanwhile, he let the horse wander wherever it pleased. It led him into the heart of the dense forest, where the king had never been. It was approaching noon, and the king began to feel thirst and hunger. Only now did he realize that he did not know where he was.But then the thicket parted, and the king saw a beautiful pond. Holy wise men were sitting on that pond. The wise men asked the king why he had come to them. To which he told them about his sorrow, about the fact that he had no son. The wise men told him about the glory of Putrada Ekadashi and that those who observe it will surely receive a son.The king thanked the wise men and hastened to his kingdom. When the day of the fast arrived, all the king’s relatives and servants observed it. Soon after, the queen became pregnant, and they had a son, who later took his father’s place in the rule and cared for his parents in old age.
