Utpanna Ekadashi Fast

Utpanna Ekadashi is observed in the month of Margashirsha.

Legend

Long ago, a powerful demon defeated all the demigods and drove them out of the heavenly realms. The demigods, not losing heart, complained to the supreme deity, who then gathered an army and led it himself to battle the demonic army. The demon laughed when he saw the divine army approaching him. With one blow, he routed all the warriors of the supreme deity. The Lord, in turn, released thousands of arrows that struck the entire demonic army. Only the deity and the demon remained on the battlefield. For thousands of years their battle continued. The God was exhausted, so he took refuge in a cave to rest. The demon tracked him down and intended to kill him while he slept, but as soon as he approached him, a beautiful maiden emerged from the God’s body. In a few blows, she disarmed the demon and defeated him, beheading him. This happened on the 11th day of the waning moon, or Ekadashi. After that, the Lord woke up, saw the slain demon and the maiden, and asked who she was. The maiden replied that she was his inner strength; the demon had plotted to kill him in his sleep, and then she appeared. The God asked how he could repay her, and she asked to be given the power and blessing to free from the consequences of sins all those who would fast on this day. The deity agreed, and at that very moment disappeared.
