Mokshada Ekadashi Fast

Mokshada Ekadashi is observed in the month of Margashirsha. From Sanskrit “Moksha” means liberation.

Legend

One prosperous kingdom was ruled by a wise king. He had an abundance of everything, and everyone loved and respected him. He was surrounded by wise men, and he treated his servants like his own children. One night he had a terrible dream, as if his father was suffering in hell and could not ascend to heaven. After this night, the king lost all joy in life. Neither his wealth nor even his family now brought him satisfaction. In despair, he turned to his wise men, asking them to help him resolve his anxiety about his father. To which he heard the advice to turn to a saint who knows the past, present, and future of everyone. The king immediately went to him.Upon arriving at the saint, the king immediately told him about his sorrow. The saint listened and immersed himself in meditation. After the saint was ready to give an answer, he said: Your father in earthly life committed a very serious sin, for which he is now paying in hell. To which the king asked how he could help his father avoid this fate, what sacrifice he should make to appease the gods. The saint replied: Observe the sacred Mokshada Ekadashi in the month of Margashirsha according to all the rules – those who observe it are able to free themselves from the consequences of all the sinful actions of their relatives. When the time of the fast came, the king, his relatives, and all his servants observed this Ekadashi. As soon as it ended, the king saw how his father, accompanied by demigods, ascended to heaven and thanked his son for freeing him.
