According to the Vedic Scriptures, from the age of five to the very old age, a person must twice a month from year to year undergo Ekadashi . The purpose of this event is to increase the sattvic nature of a person and reduce the tamasic and rajasic. There is no exact date determining its beginning and end. Calculations are made, focusing on the lunar calendar. At the end of this article you will find an exact Ekadashi calendar for different cities and time zones.
What to pay attention to?
Calculating the days in which one should observe fasting without experience is not easy. When calculating, it is worth considering that lunar days often do not coincide with solar days and begin at different times for many regions. Sometimes the calculation may take into account the transition to winter or summer time and the speed of the Moon’s rotation around the Earth. Also, there are 2 methods for determining the date of the beginning of the fast.
- Vedic traditions. In this case, the days are counted from sunrise.
- Western example. Here, on the contrary, the countdown goes from midnight.
The calendar compiled according to Vedic traditions is considered the most reliable method of calculation.
How to calculate correctly?
Each year has 24 Ekadashis, 2 per month. And a month, in turn, consists of 30 lunar days and is divided into light (increasing) and dark (decreasing) halves. This happens on the 11th and 26th lunar days according to the astrological calendar. To correctly form a calendar for each month, you need
- Find out the sunrise time in the desired region and subtract 1 hour 30 minutes from this time.
- Determine the beginning of the 11th lunar day. This happens with the moonrise.
Analyze the calculations made. When the moonrise occurs later than 1.5 hours before sunrise, the fast is postponed to the next day. If the 11th lunar day occurs before the specified time, then in this case the fast begins on the same day.

It is a pity that there is no calculated calendar for Nizhny Novgorod. It is really difficult to calculate. For those who decided to fast according to the Vedic calendar, I advise you to study who is not recommended to conduct Ekadashi.

I still lean more towards the Vedic traditions of astrology. And I believe that counting the days from sunrise is more correct. However, it takes time to calculate the fasting schedule, I advise you to immediately calculate it for a year and take into account various nuances, from your location. And read the literature to understand the meaning of passing Ekadashi. Otherwise, without faith and understanding, passing Ekadashi will not become a principle and will not lead to harmony of soul, body and consciousness.
