Shayana Ekadashi Fast

Shayana (Padma) Ekadashi is observed in the month of Ashadh.

Legend

A powerful emperor had a prosperous state. Everyone lived in abundance and well-being. There was never hunger or disease. The treasury was full, and the warehouses were filled with grain. But one day, for three years, there was no rain. During this time, all the crops dried up, the treasury and warehouses were emptied. Hunger and disease came, people were in such despair that they could not even worship and serve the higher deity. The people gathered and asked their ruler for help. The emperor, having listened to them, gathered an army and went into the forest to seek answers. They wandered for a long time, met many wise men on their way, but no one could give them an answer and advice.Fortunately, they met a sacred sage who shone like a god. The emperor bowed to him and asked him to explain the reasons for the drought in his state and how to get rid of it. After thinking, the sage replied that in his state there was a peasant who incorrectly observed his service to the Lord. Because of this, drought came to them. The emperor asked what he should do to get rid of hunger and disease. The sage replied that he should punish and kill that peasant. To which the ruler replied that he could not kill an innocent person who only incorrectly serves the Lord and asked for another solution. Then the sage told him about the glory of Shayana Ekadashi and how to observe it correctly. When the time of the fast came, the emperor and his entire state observed this Ekadashi. As soon as the fast ended, it immediately rained, and the treasury and warehouses were filled again.
