Ancient Indian Medicine Ayurveda - Traditional Science of Life and Longevity

Among the numerous existing types of alternative medicine and teachings around the world, traditional Indian Ayurveda is widespread. Many who study Eastern medical teachings are interested in the principles on which it is based, the methods and ways in which treatment is carried out.

What is it?

“Science of life and longevity” is how Ayurveda is translated from Sanskrit. At the same time, it acts not only as a science, but also as a philosophical teaching, an alternative type of medicine, and for some even a way of life. There is no exact data on how exactly this scientific and philosophical teaching originated. Only such data is known that it arose more than five millennia ago in Ancient India.

Ayurvedic knowledge served as the beginning for Chinese and Tibetan medicine.
All the knowledge of this medical science for a long time was known only to the chosen ones, but from the middle of the twentieth century they began to actively practice it all over the world. Now there are about 350,000 registered doctors practicing Ayurvedic medicine. At the same time, unlike modern medicine, which is aimed at treating the symptoms of a disease using chemical drugs, treatment with Ayurveda involves coping with ailments through an analysis of the physical and mental components of a person, which are closely related to each other. It also recommends adhering to a certain lifestyle in order to maintain harmony between the body and soul of a person, on which, in turn, the state of health will depend.

Principles

Fundamental principles

This ancient Indian medical teaching is based on simplicity and naturalness - a person’s health is ensured by the harmonious coexistence of body and soul.
It should also be taken into account that everything in this world consists of the main five primary elements:

  • ether or cosmos;
  • air;
  • fire;
  • water;
  • earth.
    The causes of diseases according to Ayurveda are considered to be that if any element becomes more or less for some reason, then an imbalance occurs in the body and the person becomes ill.
    In the human body, they are not present in their pure form, but are in various combinations. The creators of the doctrine called these basic combinations doshas , which give each person special qualities and have a different nature of influence on his condition. In each person, according to the principles of Ayurveda, all three main doshas ( pitta , vata , kapha ) are present, but at the same time, one prevails, which determines his physical and psycho-emotional state. Therefore, the first stage of treatment in Ayurvedic medicine is to determine the predominant dosha in a person. For this, the patient is offered to take a special dosha test, which includes the collection and study of many of his physical and mental characteristics, for example, physique, taste preferences, speech, attitude towards finances.
    Based on the results obtained, a method is selected to adjust the amount of the predominant life force, using not the principle of suppression, but, conversely, strengthening the missing ones . This correction includes changing lifestyle, regimen and food.
    The application of this knowledge is not limited by physique, nationality, or religion.
    At the same time, nutrition in Ayurvedic teaching is given special importance, since with its help it is possible to influence the imbalance of doshas. The diet should be dominated by spices, spices, vegetables and fruits, and grain products. It is also recommended to cook food for one meal yourself and take it, following the following rules:
  1. only a sitting body position and do not get up immediately after eating;
  2. the maximum portion in the middle of the day, and it is not allowed to eat after sunset;
  3. do not be distracted by other things;
  4. eat only when hungry;
  5. do not drink liquid during and after eating.
