Parsva Ekadashi Fast

Parsva Ekadashi is observed in the month of Bhadrapada.

Legend

In ancient times, there was a king who, despite being from a family of demons, worshipped the supreme deity. In his sacrifices and worship, he attained such power that he was able to defeat the demigod to whom the supreme being had given the heavenly kingdom. The demigod complained to the supreme being and begged him to help him regain the heavenly kingdom. The supreme deity decided to teach the king a lesson and put him in his place. To do this, he transformed himself into a dwarf and asked the king to give him land for his three steps. Seeing no danger to himself, the king gave the dwarf the land. Then the supreme being assumed his true size, first he encompassed the whole earth, then the whole heavenly kingdom, and asked the king where he should take his last, third step. When the king realized who was before him, he bowed down and offered his head for the third step. Thus he expressed his humility before the deity.
